Subsidy is calculated as âš30,000/kW for the first 2 kW, plus âš18,000 for the 3rd kW â capped at âš78,000 for systems of 3 kW or larger. Some special-category states offer a higher top-up.

PM-KUSUM â Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan â is the central government scheme that helps farmers move away from costly diesel and grid-dependent irrigation to solar-powered pumps. It runs in three components, but the one most relevant to individual farmers is Component B: subsidy on new standalone solar irrigation pumps.
Small solar plants (500 kWâ2 MW) on farmland â sell power to the grid for extra income.
New off-grid solar irrigation pumps, 3 HP to 7.5 HP (up to 10 HP in some states).
Convert your existing diesel/electric pump connection to run on solar.
Subsidy Structure
- â 30% central government subsidy
- â Additional state subsidy â typically 30% (varies by state)
- â Farmer share is often as low as 10%, with the remainder available as a bank loan
- â Combined subsidy can reach up to ~60% (higher in NE & hilly states)
Exact state-topup percentages are set by each state's renewable energy nodal agency and can change â we confirm the current Bihar rates for you before you apply.
Who Can Apply
- â Individual farmers & farmer groups
- â Cooperatives & panchayats owning agricultural land
- â Farmers currently using diesel pumps or with no reliable grid power
